1. Scope
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the density of lubricating grease. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. However, the SI units of density are kg/m3, but g/cm3 are more commonly used. 1.3 This test method can also be used to determine the relative density or specific gravity (SG) of lubricating grease. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
This test method is typically used to determine the density of lubricating grease. As the quantity of grease to be used in a bearing test such as Test Method D6138 was originally defined by volume, this allows the user to define the quantity of grease so that the correct volume is used as required by the bearing.
