(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK40017 - New Test Methods for Method for the Preparation of Hydrated Lime for Specific Surface Analysis and Pore Volume Analysis.

Developed by Subcommittee: C07.06 | Committee C07 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

This test method allows for the preparation of a sample for measurement of specific surface area (BET surface area) of either high calcium or dolomitic hydrated lime. As the surface area of hydrated lime can be modified by temperature, limiting the temperature of sample preparation (conditioning) is required to ensure that the measured specific surface area represents the as-manufactured product and is not, in part, an artifact of the test method. This standard will normalize the preparation method for analysis of BET specific surface area in order to ensure that inflated values are not reported as true to users seeking product above a specific surface area minimum. As changes in the preparation are likely to cause changes in the end value, the preparation steps should be uniform throughout the industry.
