New Test Method for Determining Concentration, Count, and Size Distribution of Solid Particles and Water in Lube Oils by Direct Imaging

1. Scope

1.1 This test method uses a direct imaging analyzer to count and measure the size of dispersed solid particles and water droplets in lube oils in the overall range from 1-300 m . The imaging capability of the instrument allows for the determination of shapes to classify detected objects including solid particles and water droplets. 1.2 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measure are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Keywords

imaging; solid particles; water droplets; lube oil

Rationale

The current research reports only measure down to 4 m. This will measure to 0.7 m. This will eliminate the interference of water and measure the water size and concentration in one instrument.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
