1. Rationale
At the time of publication of D5236, mercury barometers and non-tilting Mercury McLeod gauges were the only primary standards available for pressure calibration that were allowed by the method annexes. Since that time, accurate, non-mercury containing primary standard pressure devices have been developed. These are typically used in lieu by secondary gauge manufacturers to calibrate their pressure sensors. Due to the strong push within ASTM to remove or provide alternatives to mercury in the standard test methods, we believe that rewording of these method sections is in order to allow for the use of other, non-mercury containing devices as primary standards for purposes of pressure measurement and calibration of secondary gauges/sensors. This revision will attempt to broaden the appropriate method sections to allow for other primary standard devices to be used in place of mercury barometers and McCleod gauges
