Work Item: ASTM WK39910 - New Practice for Standard Practice for the Use of Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing for Monitoring Ground Movements Around Utilities and Tunnels

Developed by Subcommittee: F36.10 | Committee F36 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

To be determined. Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing is a mature technology given its strong record of over 20 years. Nevertheless, underground utilities are yet to embrace its unrivaled capability to benefit from its power. This may be due to the complex mechanisms surrounding the use of this technology in rugged ground conditions when the optical fiber is so fragile. One dimensional long structures buried in soils such as utilities and tunnels offer the best market for the use of this technology. Recent research studies around the world offer the promise of this technology in monitoring ground movements around underground utilities and tunnels. No standards exist that govern the use of this technology. ASTM offers the most viable platform that can encourage wise use of this monitoring application of optical fiber.
