Work Item: ASTM WK39820 - New Specification for Alumina Matrix Composites (AMC) for Surgical Implant Applications

Developed by Subcommittee: F04.13 | Committee F04 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

This specification covers material requirements for composite materials known as both alumina matrix composites and zirconia toughened aluminas. They are alumina matrix composites with a zirconia toughening phase used for surgical implant applications. The newest entry into the field of biomedical materials is the alumina matrix composite, also known as AMC. This is the material that commonly known as Delta as designed by CeramTec. In order to assure that these materials can be developed by multiple sources in a safe and valuable way, it is necessary to have specifications to which materials manufacturers can design to.
