This specification covers polymer type eye protectors designed to attach to and compliment football helmet faceguards so to provide for additional protection and reduce injury to the eye and adnexa due to impact on the field of play from objects which may penetrate the protection provided by the grid of the helmet faceguard.
Currently there is no standard for the optical and impact performance of football helmet eye shield visors which have since their introduction become widespread in use in professional and collegient sports. As with all other eye protector devices used in impact prone sports, minimum performance criteria is necessary to insure the wearers of such devices are assure adaquate protective performance, fracture resistance, and visual acuity performance which will not denigrate player performance.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
