1. Rationale
In D 7430, the definition for a System Sample in Section 3.2.23 reads - 3.2.23 system sample, na sample collected from a test batch or lot of coal by the mechanical sampling system being tested for bias -. Due to the last four words, this definition refers only to samples collected by the sampling system for bias tests. This specificity is one of those items left over from the time when the bias test standard D 6518 was separate and was not changed when combined into D 7430. In fact, the term does refer to any sample produced by a mechanical sampling system and this Work Item is to ballot removing the last four words - ... being test for bias - in order to expand the definition to include any samples produced by the sampling system. The term system sample will be used in other standards - specifically D2013 and D 3302 - and, if passed, willl move from D 7430 into D 121 since it will be a definition used in multiple standards.
