ASTM WK39498

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK39498 - Revision of E162 - 12a Standard Test Method for Surface Flammability of Materials Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source

Active Standard: E162 - 12a

Developed by Subcommittee: E05.22 | Committee E05 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Previous revisions to ASTM E162 Section 6.1.8 clarified how the air flow measurements through the stack are to be made. The Standard was revised to specify the use of a hot wire anemometer inserted into the center of the stack. At the previous Task Group meeting, it was discussed that many labs use a bi-directional probe or similar device at the top of the stack opening. Labs that have used both methods shared that they have found little to no differences in airflow measurement. The purpose of this revision to paragraph 6.1.8 is to permit either the hot wire anemometer inserted into the center of the stack or the use of a bi-directional probe (or similar device) at the top of the stack opening. This proposal also includes details in 6.1.8.1 for how the hole for insertion of the probe is to be made.
