ASTM WK39150

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK39150 - Revision of D6138 - 11 Standard Test Method for Determination of Corrosion-Preventive Properties of Lubricating Greases Under Dynamic Wet Conditions (Emcor Test)

Active Standard: D6138 - 11

Developed by Subcommittee: D02.G0.06 | Committee D02 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

The precision statement for the D6138 method is based upon an IP220 round robin from 1965 run using distilled, synthetic-seawater, and salt water. At some point the reference to distilled water was changed to ISO 3696 Grade 2 water. The subcommittee is not aware of any documentation to support this change. If the original intent of the method was to use distilled water, ASTM D1193 states that Type II reagent water was intended to characterize product water from distillation processes. For this reason a work item is being created to revise section 7.2 removing the reference to ISO 3696 Grade 2 water and replacing it with freshly boiled double distilled water or water conforming to Specification ASTM D1193, Type II.
