1. Rationale
The precision statement for the D6138 method is based upon an IP220 round robin from 1965 run using distilled, synthetic-seawater, and salt water. At some point the reference to distilled water was changed to ISO 3696 Grade 2 water. The subcommittee is not aware of any documentation to support this change. If the original intent of the method was to use distilled water, ASTM D1193 states that Type II reagent water was intended to characterize product water from distillation processes. For this reason a work item is being created to revise section 7.2 removing the reference to ISO 3696 Grade 2 water and replacing it with freshly boiled double distilled water or water conforming to Specification ASTM D1193, Type II.
