ASTM WK38665

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK38665 - Revision of E2089 - 00(2006) Standard Practices for Ground Laboratory Atomic Oxygen Interaction Evaluation of Materials for Space Applications

Active Standard: E2089 - 00(2006)

Developed by Subcommittee: E21.04 | Committee E21 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Table 1 Comparative Erosion Data requires an update. Data from the Materials International Space Station Experiments (MISSE) over the past 5 years have shown that Kapton HN has a slightly different space erosion yield than shown Kapton H. Kapton HN should be listed on a separate line with an erosion yield of 2.8 x 10-24. Kapton H is no longer manufactured. Existing stock is aging. This is forcing conversion to Kapton HN for test. E 2089 needs to recognize this constraint. It might be worthy of a note to explain that while Kapton H was the preferred material for test, it is no longer manufactured. Also, section 4.1, that recommends the use of Kapton H rather than HN at higher effective fluence, needs to be revised to provide a different option or approach when the user cannot obtain Kapton H.
