ASTM WK38589

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK38589 - Revision of D4000 - 12 Standard Classification System for Specifying Plastic Materials

Active Standard: D4000 - 13

Developed by Subcommittee: D20.94 | Committee D20 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Project X-94-46: There has been confusion as to how sample thickness should be called out in several designations under Suffix F (Flammability) found in Table 3 of ASTM D4000. Where other suffix sections ask for a 3-digit number x factor = value, Suffix F calls for 3-digit number = thickness x factor. Though the end result is the same, not everyone interprets it the same and there is potential to list the line call-out incorrectly. This rewording will affect suffixes FA, FF, FJ, FM, FN, FU, and FV. Though these are editorial, the fact that the burn rate must be listed as a maximum was previously omitted on suffixes FA, FJ, FU and FV and needs to be added as well.
