Work Item: ASTM WK38545 - New Test Method for Measurement of the Normalized Insertion Loss of Sound Isolating Doors

Developed by Subcommittee: E33.03 | Committee E33 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

The sound insulation properties of a door are measured in a laboratory as the sound transmission loss in accordance with Test Method E90. Using these data single number rating sound transmission class (STC) is assigned. Often it is possible to measure the apparent transmission loss of a door in the field using Test Method E336 and assign the single number rating apparent sound transmission class (ASTC). However, in many cases it is impossible to perform this test in accordance with Test Method E336 either because the spaces on one or both sides of the door are too small, or one or both spaces are large and have too much absorption. This test method provides an alternative method of evaluating doors in such cases using a normalized insertion loss with a resulting single number rating door transmission class, DTC. This standard is needed to provide a way to evaluate the performance of doors in the field in situations where the methods of E336 cannot be used to measure the apparent transmission loss. The plan is to reference it in E336 as the method to be used in such situations. It also provides a simpler measurement than that in E336 for a result that is comparable to the apparent transmission loss.
