ASTM WK38300

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK38300 - Revision of B221 - 12 Standard Specification for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Extruded Bars, Rods, Wire, Profiles, and Tubes

Active Standard: B221 - 12a

Developed by Subcommittee: B07.03 | Committee B07 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Revise Note 3. The properties of 6064-T6/T6511 were revised upwards when the tentative registration was moved to final. The properties in Table 2 need to be revised. 2) 6013-T6/T6511 is registered and Alcoa requests its addition to B221 and B221. The alloy composition needs to be added to Table 1 and properties added to Table 2. 3) Footnote 7 for Suspect corrosion performance has been revised in ASD Table 6.4. The corresponding Table 4 in B221 and B221 should be changed to agree with the AA footnotes. (Note - the revisions of ASD were initiated in response to inquiries to ASTM standards) 4) There is no caution against using high Mg 5xxx alloys in high temperature applications such as provided in ASTM B928/B928M. In light of the Navy reports of sensitization for 5xxx extrusions in marine use, I am assuming that the concerns for sheet and plate in high temperature applications would be similar for extrusions. The note in ASTM B928/B928M is: NOTE 4-Alloys 5059, 5083, 5086, 5383, and 5456 should not be used for service, which provides prolonged exposure to temperatures exceeding 150F [65C] (whether continuous exposure or discontinuous exposure) because of the risk of sensitization and the resulting susceptibility to intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Cold forming can also increases susceptibility to intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
