1. Rationale

The current definition for lapped seam is incomplete as it appears in D5646. It was copied directly into D5646 from D4965 96 (2008) Standard Terminology of Seams and Seam Finishes Used in Home Sewing, and is identical in the earlier D4965-96 (2002) version. The current definition in D123-12 (taken from text in D6193) will take the place of the incomplete definition currently in D5646.
