1. Scope
This Standard provides requirements for mortars for the construction of non-reinforced and reinforced unit masonry structures. Mortars are specified based on performance characteristics in the plastic state and the hardened state. For plastic mortars, this Standard establishes performance characteristics such as workability, unit-mortar capability, and bleeding. For hardened mortars, it establishes performance characteristics such as compressive strength, bond strength, compatibility with reinforcement and embedded metals, and freeze-thaw durability.
The Task Groups objective is to develop a performance specification for mortars under the jurisdiction of C12. This standard would not be limited to mortar materials currently addressed by ASTM Specification C 270. The task group considered two approaches, one similar to European performance specifications for mortar, and the other similar to a draft standard for mortar for existing masonry. The first approach was favored by most task group members and visitors. Recent work of the task group has focused on developing the right combination of chemical requirements and performance requirements for mortar constituents. This draft specification was first balloted at Subcommittee in April 2012. This second Subcommittee ballot is intended to address Negatives and Comments received in that ballot.
