This specification establishes requirements and test methods for the color and appearance retention of solid and variegated colored plastic siding products. Color retention testing provides a method for estimating the acceptability of color change in a siding product over a period of years of service. In this specification the measurement and evaluation of color change are done using units in CIELab color space. ASTM standards specifications D6864 and D7251 have similar scopes and similar methodology using Hunter Lab color space.
The Hunter color space used for measurement of sample color and evaluation of color change in ASTM D6864 (for solid colors) and D7251 (for variegated colors) has become obsolete. The purpose of this proposed standard is to combine the coverage for both solid and variegated colors into one standard, and provide for the use of CIELab measurement and evaluation methodology. As with D6864 and D7251, the stadard will be used primarily in the plastic siding industry.
