1. Rationale
ASTM C 652 has different face shell thickness requirements for units with nominal widths of 8, 10 and 12 in. From discussions with industry experts this could be based on the manufacturing limits or practice at the time the dimensional requirements were set. With modern manufacturing technologies quality hollow brick can be manufactured with thinner web shells. This would reduce the weight of the units, seismic design loads and transportation and installation cost with out significantly impacting the structural capacity.
