    1. Rationale

    The Wind Farm electrical industry utilizes large 35kV underground power cables to collect and transfer high voltage power from the windmill generation fields to channel the power either directly to a substation or to connect into an overhead transmission line. Large conductor size power cables are needed to carry this power flow and handle the load current. Conventional cable is manufactured using compressed aluminum conductors (to ASTM B231). By adopting the use of the smaller diameter compact conductors it will enable a lower cost power cable solution. ASTM B400 was changed in 2008 to incorporate the 1100 kcmil compact conductor size. This proposal is to extend the kcmil conductor size range of ASTM B400 to permit larger Class B compact conductor constructions.
