Work Item: ASTM WK37977 - New Test Method for Field Determination of In-Service Oil Properties using IR Spectroscopy

Developed by Subcommittee: D02.96.03 | Committee D02 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

This method aims to provide a means for the rapid assessment of In-Service Oil Properties using infrared spectroscopy. It describes a methodology for sampling, performing analysis and providing key In-Service Oil Properties with a handheld or portable, self-contained unit that is meant for field use. The standard is needed because there already exists a large user base in a variety of industries which rely on such field equipment to ascertain the status of their in-service oil. However there as yet exists no standard for this analysis. Users include mining companies, municipalities, oil companies, oil analysis service providers, amongst many other industries.

Keywords

oxidation, nitration, sulfation, soot, antiwear additive, Breakdown I, Breakdown II, water, antioxidant depletion

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
