ASTM WK37816

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK37816 - Revision of A500 / A500M - 10a Standard Specification for Cold-Formed Welded and Seamless Carbon Steel Structural Tubing in Rounds and Shapes

Active Standard: A500 / A500M - 10a

Developed by Subcommittee: A01.09 | Committee A01 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

A question has arisen concerning whether the ERW weld should be allowed to be located in one of the corners on A500 tubing. The question came with photographs illustrating severe cracking in an ERW weld where the weld seam was actually located in the corner. Other examples have also been given over the last few months. ASTM A500 does not currently prohibit the weld seam from being located there. After some conversation with some other A01.09 Sub-Committee members, it was agreed that the standard should make that prohibition. After much conversation the proposed revision listed meets the concerns of most, but not all, of the A01.09 sub committee members that I have talked to. The consensus is that the weld will not be allowed in the corner unless requested by the purchaser.
