1. Rationale
ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke has established a new Task Group to investigate the determination of carbon and sulfur in coal and coke using analyzers operating at 1350oC. One of the goals of the Task Group is to establish a precision and bias statement for the determination of coke since one does not exist. Another goal is to establish a precision and bias statement for the determination of coke and sulfur using analyzers calibrated with pure substances. ASTM standard D5373 has a precision and bias statement for the simultaneous of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen in coals determined with analyzers calibrated with pure substances, but this standard does not apply to cokes. ASTM standard D4239 has a precision and bias statement for sulfur (determined at 1350oC) but not with analyzers calibrated with pure substances. It has been suggested by Task Group members that D4239 be revised to include procedures for the determination of carbon and sulfur in coal and cokes using analyzers operating at 1350oC and calibrated with pure substances. That is the main focus of the proposed Task Group work.
