1. Rationale
This work item was initiated to reflect the recent revisions of definitions of structural composite lumber (SCL), laminated strand lumber (LSL), laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and parallel strand lumber (PSL), and the addition of oriented strand lumber (OSL) and laminated veneer bamboo (LVB) in the family of SCL products in D5456. 1) Since the LVB is not made of wood, the current definition of SCL in D09 as a composite of wood elements is out of date. 2) The definitions of LSL, LVL, and PSL in D5456 now consist of single sentences according to ASTM rules. 3) The definitions of OSL and LVB are now included in D5456. These items were balloted twice at the committee level and both received negatives that were considered persuasive and the ballots were withdrawn. As a result of the negatives and comments, it was proposed and unanimously approved by the subcommittee to remove all SCL related (SCL, LVB, LVL, LSL, OSL, PSL) definitions from D09. The rationale for this is that they are beyond the scope of D09. Besides, until they are defined in noncontroversial manner in D5456, D5055 and building codes it was felt that voting members of ASTM will not be able to reach consensus.
