1. Rationale
The proposed changes to ASTM E 1776 are primarily editorial changes and clarifications.Section 3.2 provides definitions for two terms that are never used in the document. That should be deleted.Changes in section 7 are intended to show more consistency and precision in stating the role and use of scenario classes and representative fire scenarios in fire risk assessment rather than making less specific and less clear references to scenarios. The change to 8.1.2 reflects the fact that structural damage due to fire can not only lead to deaths, injuries and property damage but can also cause business interruption and losses in that form. The changes to 8.1.4 are designed to remove possible confusion in the use of environment in two different ways, the first to refer to potential targets for fire damage in the flora, fauna, air, and water, and the second to refer to the immediate surroundings in the building of the product and the initial fire.Section 8.6.7 inadvertently duplicates Section 8.7, and so the former should be deleted. Most of the rest of the changes are intended to provide more guidance on the advantages of using only relative measures of risk and on the way such usage will reduce the burden of the analysis.
