1. Rationale
A number of laboratories have reported numerous fires when doing D86 distillation using flasks made of borosilicate glass. These fires have been invariably been attributed to fatigue and deformities of the borosilicate flask. Some laboratories have resorted to using quartz distillation flask to alleviate if not eliminate these fire incidents. However, use of quartz distillation flask is not indicated in D86, thus making these laboratories using quartz distillation flask when performing D86 out of compliance with the method. This proposed revision serves to revise A2.1 to allow the use of quartz distillation flasks in addition to borosilicate distillation flasks in D86. The research report supporting this revision is included as an item in this ballot.
