1. Rationale
ASTM International is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. With this in mind, it has become necessary to identify and correct the inherent problem with high temperatures required to obtain the EVT for applications of some roofing products verses the lower flash point of some BURA available on the market. Asphalts with lower flash points are successfully used in the marketplace and the addition of language to this standard is not meant to curtail their use where it makes sense to use them. It is necessary however to acknowledge changes in the marketplace and that the stewardship of our processes and products require the notification to the potential dangers inherent in the use of BURA. The addition of this notification to this specification is listed below.
