    1. Rationale

    An administrative ballot was held and it was approved by a wide majority to submit a ballot to return to the pre-merger versions of E 284-08 and E 92-82, as last published in the 2009 edition of Vol. 03.01 of the ASTM Standards. The merged version is a disaster as it does not properly address the needs of users of microindentation hardness testers nor the needs of macro Vickers users. An extensive list of the problems with the merged version of E 384-11 is given in the ballot.
