1. Rationale

D4255 has not been revised significantly since 2001, and newer D30 methods such as D5379 and D7078 are considered to be better for shear strength assessment. D30 considers this standard to be mature, and does not plan to maintain this standard beyond re-approvals in the future due to limited manpower. This revision does a boilerplate update to the standard and designates it as mature in Section 1.3.
