ASTM WK36235

(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK36235 - Revision of D4404 - 10 Standard Test Method for Determination of Pore Volume and Pore Volume Distribution of Soil and Rock by Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry

Active Standard: D4404 - 10

Developed by Subcommittee: D18.06 | Committee D18 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Rationale

Recently a commission of the European Union recommended to the Parliment of the European Union to try to eliminate the use of mercury within Europe wherever possible. The commission determined, with input from users and manufacturers of mercury porosimeterrs, that there is not currently a widely-available alternative to mercury porosimetery. The instrument manufacturers, working with a committee of IUPAC, have developed a set of recommendations for the safe use of such instrumentation, including recommendations for recycling the used mercury, safe handling, and proper disposal of analyzed samples. The current review is underway to make sure that the IUPAC recommendations are covered adequately in this standard test method, and if not, to revise the standard as needed.
