Work Item: ASTM WK36209 - New Guide for Standard Guide for Describing the Methodology Associated with Determining In-Service Lubricant Testing Strategy

Developed by Subcommittee: D02.96.04 | Committee D02 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

This standard guide pertains to identifying oil tests properties associated with certain failure modes of plain and roller element bearings. This standard guide would provide a standardized approach to justify selection of physical/chemical parameters for the condition based maintenance program and suggested testing frequency. This should assist end users to enhance their condition assessment of plain and roller element bearings in-service, improve equipment reliability and reduce maintenance costs. Oil analysis programs are a part of condition based maintenance and have been since the 1940s. Oil monitoring approaches and practices should provide data that assists with monitoring failure mode progression. Improper tests and inadequate frequency of testing will reduce the oil analysis program effectiveness. This new guide would support end users with the appropriate selection of oil test to assess their equipment condition at the earliest possible stage of failure progression.
