Work Item: ASTM WK35986 - New Test Method for Field Inspection of Transmission Poles and Lattice Towers

Developed by Subcommittee: G01.10 | Committee G01 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

The standard will provide a methodology for performing above ground and below ground inspection of transmission poles and lattice towers in the field. The standard will detail a multi-level approach to inspection based on the results of each level of inspection. The base level will be performed by utility personnel or contractors looking for signs of metal corrosion. The second level will utilize methods to inspect the towers for the extent of the corrosion and the potential cause for corrosion. The third level will use specific test methods to isolate the corrosion locations and to determine the rate of corrosion. The standard will provide sample documents to summarize the inspection results. The standard is needed by utilities to provide tools for their maintenance departments that inspect and repair transmission structures.
