    1. Scope

    This specification covers the polyethylene material and dimensions applicable to mechanical joint adapters (MJs) used to connect polyethylene pipes to other mechanical joint pipe and components such as valves and MJ fittings. This standard describes outside diameter controlled polyethylene (PE) pipe MJ adapters (FAs) in diameters ranging from 2 in. through 65 in. (63 mm through 1651 mm). The MJ adapters may be manufactured by various methods including injection molding, compression molding, and machining from thick-wall polyethylene pipe (eg; custom ASTM F714 pipe). The mechanical joint adapter is the principal component of the MJ connections widely used for over two decades in low-pressure to high-pressure polyethylene pipe systems for all types of pressurized flow (gas and liquid) applications. The MJ adapters physical shape consists of the pipe-like Neck which is monolithic with its Hub, beyond which is the gasket supporting nose. The Neck is intended to be butt-fused or fusion coupled to the pipe-line; while the Hub is intended to effect the gasket seal when subjected to the axially applied load from the gland ring with its properly torqued tee-bolts and nuts.

    Polyethylene pipe has been made for 50-years. There are no standards for polyethylene mechanical joint adapters regarding uniform dimensions and design equations for pressure rating. This new standard will follow the format of the newly published ASTM F2280.
