1. Rationale
Revisions to ASTM F 1930 Rationale WK3555 The task group held a two day meeting early in April to finalize the skin burn injury prediction method. The updated skin burn injury prediction method has been incorporated into this proposed revision of F 1930. The updated skin burn injury prediction method appears in Section 12 Calculations of Results, of this draft. Placing the information in the main body the test method required modifications to the previous version. In particular Annex A2 was changed to Appendix X1, as it now primarily provides additional information on the historical development of the skin burn injury prediction method adopted. This Appendix does duplicate some of the information in Section12. With the removal of the old Annex A2, the Annex section was renumbered. Many small editorial corrections were made, but there are still a few to be made. In Section 2 Referenced Documents, some of the references to ASTM volumes are incomplete. Statement 1.3 in the Scope has been added to clearly state a limitation inherent in the skin burn injury prediction method. Several terms in Section 3 Terminology have been edited. Many other statements have been reworded to remove ambiguities. These appear through the track changes editor. With the addition of two new Tables in Section 12, the follow on Tables have all been renumbered. The physical properties of the skin and subcutaneous layers stated in this draft are different from the recently approved test method. At the time of this submission only one test case has been examined in detail. The case was a three second exposure of a single layer 6 oz aramid coverall with cotton t-shirt and briefs. Using the existing F 1930 properties the skin burn injury was calculated to be 32 %, second degree or worse. Using the properties proposed in this draft, the skin burn injury was calculated to be 29 % for the same exposure. The outcome of other analysis will be examined and presented at the June meeting. Please note the Revision Statement below. Revision This standard is under consideration for revision within an ASTM International technical committee. The revisions proposed have not received all approvals required to become an ASTM International standard. It shall not be reproduced or circulated or quoted, in whole or part, outside of ASTM International Committee activities except with the approval of the Chairman of the Committee having jurisdiction and the President of the Society.
