1. Rationale

In C174, section 5.1, the standard states as follows 5. Procedure 5.1 Before any measurements of the core length are made, calibrate the apparatus with suitable gages so that errors caused by mechanical imperfections in the apparatus are known. When these errors exceed 0.25 mm [0.01 in.], apply suitable corrections to the core length measurements. This ballot item will add a definition for suitable gage.
