ASTM WK34710

    New Practice for Sustainable Dentistry

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: E60.80 | Committee E60 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

The practice will identify the key issues related to sustainability in the manufacture and use of dental products to assist the dental industry and the dental profession in promoting and applying sustainable practices in oral health care. The practice will define a dental management system model to illustrate how to embed the value of corporate social responsibility into the practice of dentistry, as well as create and promote recommended sustainable best practices.

Dental professionals would use the standards to identify best practices in sustainability when selecting materials and products; determine appropriate disposal (reuse, recycle, composting, etc.) of products; build or remodel dental offices and when discharging materials into the waste stream (via water or solid waste). Additionally, these standards would assist with training dental practice staff and in the development of educational materials for patient and public distribution. Dental manufacturers and distributors would use the standard to refine design and manufacture products and market products with instructions for use that support sustainable practices for their customers. Dental educators would use the standards to educate dental professionals during their training in sustainable dental practices.
