The purpose of this ballot is to add provisions for the application of abuse resistant gypsum board to steel framing. Abuse resistant gypsum panels are harder and denser than other gypsum panels and require more force to pull the screw heads flush with the panel surface. The 0.0312 minimum steel thickness for studs to receive abuse resistant gypsum board is to prevent screw spinouts which often occur in thinner steel when applying these harder products. The 0.0312 thickness is consistent with the minimum published steel thickness for structural EQ studs currently on the market.
