1.1The procedure described in this method is used to determine concentrations of formaldehyde, individual organic halide and non-methane hydrocarbon in hydrogen fuel intended for use in fuel cell vehicles (FCV) by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). As required by SAE J2719, hydrogen intended for use in fuel cell vehicles is expected to contain less than 0.05mole/mole total halogenates (including organic halides), 2mole/mole total non-methane hydrocarbons (C1 Basis) and 0.01mole/mole formaldehyde. 1.2Based upon the GC/MS/full scan analysis of a 400mL hydrogen sample, the reporting limit is 0.001mole/mole for each organic halide and non-methane hydrocarbon and 0.005mole/mole formaldehyde. However, formaldehyde detection limit can be lowered to 0.001mole/mole when the GC/MS/SIM (selected ion monitoring) mode is employed.
This standard is needed for analysis of hydrogen fuel quality for fuel cell vehicles to satisfy SAE J2719. The standard will be used by any lab for hydrogen fuel quality. The end users are laboratories for hydrogen fuel quality.
