1. Rationale
The use of a commercially available pre-tested aluminum foil sheet has often been used for routine verification of the operation of older design burst testing machine. (e.g. Mullens Testers). However, due to differences in design of modern testing machines such as the clamping pressure, the foil suitable for one design is not suitable for all designs. Manufacturers instructions will indicate proper maintenance and verification techniques. Calibration should be carried out by techniques and measurement that are traceable to National Standards. The reference to the TAPPI T 403 Bursting Strength of Paper in section 2.2 was different from that in section 8.3. The most current edition of the TAPPI method should be used and date references dropped.
