1. Rationale
Supplementary requirement S21 covers secondary subcritical heat treatment of mechanical test specimen coupons to simulate conditions the forging will undergo during fabrication. While it is clear that the mechanical test requirements of the product specification must be completed after this laboratory subcritical heat treatment, it is not readily apparent that these tests on specimens that have received both the standard heat treatment required by the product standard and the additional purchaser specified subcritical cycle are sufficient by themselves to satisfy the product standard certification requirements; i.e. that it is not necessary to report mechanical test results on coupons that have not received the additional subcritical heat treatment. This revision is intended to indicate that the mechanical test results from test specimens that have been subjected to the specified additional subcritical heat treatment are sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the product standard, unless the purchaser specifies otherwise, in accordance with the additional requirements included in this revision
