1. Scope
This specification covers the materials and testing of stainless steel shielded couplings used to join hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings by directly inserting the pipe or fitting into the gasket sleeve without removing the gasket from the shield assembly. The proposed standard will utilize the shield assembly found in ASTM C1277.
This standard is needed to specify a type of coupling which uses a different assembly method and gasket sealing sleeve than the conventional stainless steel shielded couplings currently used for the same purpose. The standard could be adopted into model codes, be cited by specifiers, and would guide third party agencies performing quality control oversight.
