    1. Scope

    This test method can be used to determine the physical characteristics of an RECP, quantified as index properties. These properties include thickness, mass per unit area, tensile strength, coverage (expressed in terms of light penetration), water absorption, porosity and resiliency. Alternate ASTM methods exist to determine each of these properties, independently; however, values obtained via this method are determined on common samples. When index properties of RECPs are determined independently, variability of results is independent of other testing. The inherent variability of RECP properties within individual units results in a wide range of possible results. Independent variability of sampling and testing often yields to unexplainable results (i.e. a product seemingly thicker, providing more coverage yet lighter than expected or specified values). This method aims to provide a common sample set to perform the entire suite of testing, providing common variability. It should be noted the specific properties measured is determined by product type.
