    1. Scope

    1.1 This test method covers the determination of water-soluble nitrite concentration of a cylinder of hardened hydraulic-cement concrete. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are provided for information purposes only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Disposal of some or all of the chemicals used in this method may require adherence to EPA or other regulatory guidelines.

    Calcium nitrite is a commonly used corrosion-inhibiting admixture used in concrete. Specifying agencies often require that the dosage of nitrite in hardened concrete be ascertained to assure corrosion inhibition. Although the analysis of nitrite in water solution is possible with a high degree of both precision and accuracy, the concrete matrix and removal from the concrete matrix of the nitrite ion will affect the measurement of the concentration.
