1. Scope
This standard describes specific procedures and equipment for automatically obtaining samples of liquid petroleum crude oils from the sample point into the primary container. This standard will also provide additional specific information about sample container selection, preparation and sample handling. If sampling is for the precise determination of volatility, use API MPMS Chapter 8.4 in conjunction with this standard. For sample mixing and handling, refer to API MPMS Chapter 8.3. This standard does not cover sampling of electrical insulating oils and hydraulic fluids.
Previous versions of the sampling standards described the various sampling methods and apparatus primarily for crude oils, and provided little application guidance to the user. This version is divided into parts. The General section, Part 1 will discuss automatic sampling equipment and processes along with the sampling procedures and sample handling; Part 2 will cover Automatic Sampling for Crude Oil; Part 3 will cover Automatic Sampling of Liquid Petroleum Products, Refinery Feed Stocks and Renewable Fuel Products. It is the responsibility of the sub-committees for test methods to provide more information about sample container selection, preparation, sample handling, mixing and sample size requirements.
