(What is a Work Item? / How to Input to a Work Item)

Work Item: ASTM WK33419 - New Guide for The Calibration and Testing of Contact Surface Temperature Sensors.

Developed by Subcommittee: E20.07 | Committee E20 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

1.Scope 1.1. This guide covers techniques for contact surface temperature sensor calibration based on comparison to the surface temperature of a heat source. This document covers the range from ambient to 315 C. This standard applies to hand held contact surface sensors intended for short-term intermittent use. It does not apply to mountable surface sensors or those sensors embedded into surfaces. Methods for establishing an estimated reference surface temperature are also covered. 1.2. This standard serves only to provide information about the calibration of the sensor itself and does not provide data that is applicable to practical measurements. It only provides relative information about the sensors output under controlled test conditions that can be used to determine the change in quality of the specific sensor between calibrations. No standards of any kind exist like this standard in spite of the extensive use of surface temperature sensors in industry. There are also a number of different manufacturers producing these sensors. The standard will provide a reference for use within manufacturing and calibration quality systems.
