    1. Scope

    This proposed guide will cover standard practices which have been successfully utilized in the field for over 30 years to provide external corrosion protection of polyethylene encased transmission ductile iron pipe supplemented with cathodic protection. This guide may also be used for fittings, valves, and other appurtenances to ductile iron pipe systems.

    There is currently an ASTM standard for Polyethylene Encasement (ASTM A674) but there are no standards for the utilization of polyethylene encasement supplemented with cathodic protection. In the past some guidance has been obtained from NACE standard SP-0169 (formerly RP-0169), but the scope of the current proposed revision to this NACE standard specifically states that it does not apply to pipe protected by polyethylene encasement. It will be used as basic guidance for the application of cathodic protection to polyethylene encased ductile iron transmission pipe. It will be used by engineers, owners, water companies, corrosion consultants, DI pipe manufacturers and others who have an interest in providing underground corrosion protection to ductile iron pipe.
