1. Rationale
Table 1 contains thickness dimensions (and notch depths) that were premised for testing the whole wall thickness of pipe. The testing of whole pipes by this test method has fallen out of favor. The dimensional tolerances are therefore much greater than are required for dimensional variation. Moreover, test data shows that the dimensions allowed by the standard create variablity in the result of the test and open the test method up to manipulation. This project will establish methods for measurement of the thickness dimension when dimensional tolerances is required by standards.
