This specification covers minimum requirements of size and physical characteristics of materials for pole vault boxes intended for users attempting heights up to 6.40 m.
Surveys by Boden et.al (2001), and others have shown that falls into the pole vault box have caused significant injuries to some pole vaulting participants. Leg and arm fractures are the most common forms of injuries in plant box landings. But severe head injuries, paralysis, and even death are also related to falls into the pole vault box. Currently there are no standard specifications for the pole vault box. The rules makers for track and field only specify the dimensions of the pole vault box. Use of appropriate impact-attenuating surfacing materials in and around the plant box area may help reduce the risk of fall related injuries and deaths.
