Work Item: ASTM WK31786 - New Test Method for Determination of Total Nitrogen by Persulfate Digestion with Nitrophenol Enrichment and Colorimetric Detection

Developed by Subcommittee: D19.06 | Committee D19 Home | Contact Staff Manager

1. Scope

The scope and application for this standard is for natural and treated wastewater with a quantification limit of approximately 0.3 mg/L N. State regulatory agencies are beginning to regulate total nitrogen discharge in wastewater permits. There is no single step method or standard to determine total nitrogen. Laboratories currently have to perform a TKN and nitrate analysis, then add the two results to obtain total nitrogen. At least one state is accepting total nitrogen by persulfate digestion and colorimetric detection. A concensus-based standard is expected to be adopted the states with eventual promulgated by USEPA.
