1. Rationale
The current ash limit value for No1 and No2 diesel fuel oils may result in unacceptable maintenance interval frequency for engines equipped with an exhaust diesel particulate filter. The current ash limit can not be lowered without development of a new test method due to the inherent lack of accuracy of the D482 test method. An alternate method to control elements that result in ash is required. One such method is specification of limit values for individual metals, or groups of metals as measured utilizing the current D7111 test method. The same changes will be required for D7467.
