1. Rationale
Rationale: The D1140 standard is due for review, having a 2006 date. Revisions have been incorporated which include a title change as well as changes to describe, in more detail, specific requirements (new and old) of the test such as sample splitting, necessary equipment or apparatus and equipment verification. Several procedure changes have also been updated to more closely follow the procedures that have been outlined in D6913 Test Method for Particle-Size Distribution (Gradation) of Soils Using Sieve Analysis as well as update the standard to conform to ASTM Form and Style guidelines. Many of the revisions incorporated are a result of comments and balloting of previous versions of this standard. We thank those that have provided insight into the proposed revisions.
